When you’ve been married over 10 years with a kiddo, the exact date, or month, doesn’t matter anymore, but having a babysitter does. I can’t believe summer has come and gone, and it feels like we actually accomplished some improvements around the house! The front porch rebuild is done and looks amazing. The porch was a project that was on the top of our to-do list for years, and we put it off because we knew it would be a big investment to get it done right. It was definitely worth the wait, and a great reminder that it’s ok to take your time when renovating especially if it is your forever home. We also got a couple of vintage mid-century modern chairs professionally refinished. These chairs were another great example of waiting to get something done right. We’ve had them longer than we had the house, having them refinished was never a priority, but I’m so glad to have them back and looking good! The next couple of projects on our to-do list are to get the kitchen painted and have a new fence installed. I doubt we’ll get either of those done in September, but I’m hoping both should be attainable by the end of fall. We started the month with some long overdue yard maintenance. We are hoping to get a new fence put in later this year and wanted the overgrown weeds to be trimmed back before we start to coordinate that project. A pair of vintage MCM chairs we’ve had for years are getting professionally refinished. The new appliances we ordered at the beginning of the summer were finally delivered and they look so good. I’ve slowly been purchasing new accessories for the kitchen refresh and have narrowed down the paint choices. Getting the kitchen painted is currently on pause so we could focus our attention on another big project outside. Our front porch rebuild is finally underway! This project is definitely an investment, but it was important to me that we keep the design intent of our 100 year old brick bungalow. Among all the renovations we have going on, we’ve also been reorganizing basically everything we own. This has turned into a bigger and harder project than Dan and I anticipated, but having a less cluttered home will be well worth it. We celebrated the start of June with a family getaway to Lake Geneva, or at least a waterpark hotel near Lake Geneva. Our kiddo was living his best life at the waterpark everyday and I accepted that it wasn’t getting the Midwest beach vacation I had planned for. When we got home I felt like I was finally able to start making progress on our 2025 renovation project list. I have been pulling together a mood board for our kitchen refresh and started ordering items and picking paint colors. I’ve been getting quotes and scheduling work to get done on other areas of our house too! Knowing we’re halfway through the year already, we definitely won't be getting to all of our projects. But these days I have a ‘Progress over Perfection’ mindset and I’m happy with how things are going so far. We’ve done basically nothing to our kitchen for 10 years because it always felt like the big renovation was going to be next year. Well, after a decade of “next year” not happening, we’ve decided to focus on updating the kitchen within a smaller timeframe and budget. It’s not going to be a complete renovation -- we’re keeping the cabinets and floors as is, because I don’t want to make any big investments until it's time for my dream kitchen. Here is what we are focused on for the refresh. First up is new appliances — our fridge and oven are well past their prime and this feels like a great way to make the kitchen feel new without a complete overhaul. We recently purchased a new Samsung fridge and oven, both black stainless, and we can’t we wait for them to be delivered! We might splurge on some new Caraway pans, but we’ll definitely be keeping our favorite yellow Le Creuset Dutch Oven. The kitchen will also be getting a fresh coat of paint. We’re still deciding on a color, but it’ll probably be a cool white that we’ve used elsewhere in the house. We’re hoping that with a new light fixture, a kitchen rug, fresh hardware, new counter stools, and some colorful accessories, the kitchen will have a new vibe. Between continued construction on my client’s midcentury modern kitchen renovation and hosting a small Thanksgiving dinner, this month flew by. Hosting a small holiday gathering has been new for me in recent years, so I’ve been slowly gathering kitchen accessories. Last year, I got a Le Creuset serving tray and it is the perfect go to for any gathering. Another holiday decorating hack is to give your kiddo some craft paper and a pack of markers and put them in charge of decor. I was expecting turkeys and volcanoes, it was amazing and adorable. This month was also a milestone birthday for me! I honestly wasn’t sure how I’d feel about turning 40, but I think I’m into it. I’ve often been indifferent towards my birthday, but this year I decided I really wanted to enjoy it. Dan and I had an impromptu dinner and mini golf date the week before my birthday. Inspired by celebrating my kiddos birthday, I decided to get myself big 4-0 balloons and had a self-portrait session in my yard, it was really fun and might be a new tradition. Dan, the kiddo and I had a really nice dinner out followed by cupcakes at home and the most perfect nerdy present. This past month felt lighter after many heavy years of elder care and grief. We took a much needed family vacation to the Wisconsin Dells, which was a lovely week full of fall foliage, cheese curds, crafting and water parks. Trick or treating with my kiddo was definitely another highlight of the month. He was a calculator for the second year in a row and it was very adorable. It has also been nice to start thinking more about work and actually building my business. The past few years have been a lot of false starts of wanting to work but realistically knowing I didn’t have the capacity and my attention was needed elsewhere. This month I led a discussion about the possibilities of social media in our industry with a small group of architects. Even with only 500-ish instagram followers, I can see that architects under-utilize social media, and I have a lot of ideas and opinions about its potential. The conversation went well and was described as ‘exceeding expectations.’ I also have a client kitchen renovation under construction. I had to pause work on the project for a few months, but to finally see it coming to life is very exciting! Progress on our own house has been slow, but I’ve been planning which projects to work on next and trying to enjoy the natural slow pace of the project. We had spent the previous few years making do with what we had, since we were planning on moving out ‘soon.’ When we decided ‘soon’ was at least a few years away, I knew we needed to enjoy our living room again. Since we still love the black painted wall and restored original oak trim that we did when we moved in 10 years ago, the main thing to focus on was updating the furniture. First, I identified the great furniture pieces we already had that were worth keeping – a custom wood coffee table, vintage mid-mod accent chairs, and the aptly named Cranbrook Ceiling Fan. Next I made this mood board to help guide our vision for the space. Getting a bigger couch was top of our list, and so far I’ve been really happy with this Range modular sofa from Burrow. Another biggie for us was a TV console. We’ve been in our house for 10 years and until recently we never had a TV in our living room! After looking at a lot of options, I decided to go with a semi-custom handmade piece from Spaced Out Studio in Chicago. We had to wait a couple months for it to be built, but it was definitely worth the wait! For now, we’re using shelves we relocated to the living room from elsewhere in the house, but when I’m ready to buy a new shelf, it’s going to be this one. Beyond furniture pieces, our next big purchase is going to be a new rug. I like this one from Ruggable, but I think my 4-year-old will have some opinions on giving up his foam mat flooring. And since this is a very kid-friendly space, we also got these yellow bean bags chairs which have been just perfect for our kiddo, and this easel we’ve had will keep a prominent locati. We still have a lot more to do, like refinishing our vintage chairs, hanging more artwork and finding lots of accessories and lights. Trying to have an aesthetic living room that is also my kid’s favorite play space has been a challenge, but I’ve been trying to remind myself that slow progress is better than no progress. Having a nice grill set up in our yard is something we frequently talked about wanting after we renovated. At the end of 2023 when we decided to pause our big renovation at #calekstreetingbungalow, I wanted to jump right into smaller projects around my house. After the holidays were over and the realities of life settled in, I realized even ‘small projects’ would take some time. I often need to remind myself that even though the projects we are currently considering are smaller than a whole house renovation, they still require a significant time and financial investment. Of all the potential projects on my list, there are two that have been on my mind a lot lately. The first is to update as many building systems as are feasible right now. Earlier in March we met with a few subcontractors looking at plumbing, electrical and HVAC. We’re not planning on doing all of that at once, but we are currently trying to figure out which is the biggest priority and best use of money. The second, and more fun project I’ve been working on for #calekstreetingbungalow is updating our living room furniture. Purchasing a whole room of furniture at once is a big investment, so I’ve been slowly going through my options to make sure I’m happy with the vibe and function. Since I’ve been slowly shopping and looking at a lot of options, I’ve been sharing some cool finds on my blog. Check out these couches, area rugs and table lamps. One room that hasn’t even been on my radar is my office. Then one day a couple weeks ago, I was organizing my too small old dining room table that has been my work from home desk for four years and I immediately decided I needed new furniture . With very little research I impulsively purchased a new desk and chair, and am so happy I did! Funny how updating the furniture in some rooms requires months of shopping and others are instantly made better with a couple of impulse buys. While I've been busy figuring out projects around my house, I’ve also been working on a client kitchen renovation in a super cute mid-century modern home. I was really confused for a few minutes because I haven’t worked there since the summer of 2021. Then I remembered it was a reminder from 2019 Jessica. A couple years before I got fired, when my husband and I were trying to get pregnant with our son, I decided that I needed a plan to move on from my job. Even though I enjoyed it at the time, I always knew I had entrepreneurship in my soul and I would eventually need to start my own architecture firm. I didn’t have a plan, but I figured if I set a time to quit I could figure something out. At the time I think my reasoning was I could get in a few more years of experience at a big firm, figure out a plan, and then be ready to quit when this hypothetical at the time child was old enough to remember me working too much. I didn’t want anyone to notice that my calendar said ‘quit job’ so instead I wrote ‘Happy Hour.’ Little did 2019 Jessica realize that I’d get pregnant shortly after I set the quit date. A pandemic, other family obligations, and getting fired in 2021 would completely change the trajectory of my business plans.
